Ellie Goulding: Starry Eyed Analysis

Voyeurism: Ellie is often looking at the camera, so you cannot always ‘see without being seen’. However when she does look at the camera, you see her ‘made up face’ (blue eyes, pale face, large earrings, and signature hair). When she is not looking at the camera, you can see the rest of her body. She is not wearing provocative clothing in the video; she is wearing a jumper, with and orange bobble hat, with denim shorts and blue high heels or in a white silvery dress. In the video she is with a man, presumably a boyfriend he isn’t provocatively dancing around her, he is possibly a model. He is dressed casually not showing any unnecessary skin.

Selling the Artist: Ellie is sold through many close ups and mid-shots of her face and upper body .Her USP is probably the fact that she looks mystical in her videos like an angel, she is going for a pure and innocent image.

Lyrics/Visuals: the lyrics and visuals are direct demonstrations of each other. E.g. they words ‘starry eyed’ then stars appear or they look into the sky at the stars. Or ‘next thing we’re touching’’ the couple hold hands and put their hands to a tree.

Music/Visuals: in places of the video the music cuts on the beat of the song. For example it changes scene when it gets to the end of a verse or chorus but not on every beat or every other beat it is more randomly selected. The panning and tracking of the camera is slow which fits the mood and feel of the music. The only dancing movement is when in the later repeats of the chorus the music gets louder than normal and she sings higher than previously in the song, when she sings higher she raises her arms to signify the high note and the main point of the song.

Intertextuality:  the only reference here is that it could refer to sci-fi or fantasy films with all of the night sky involved and the tree coming technologically alive at one point. Also the man turns into the night sky which relates back to the fantasy genre.

Genre Characteristics: this song follows conventions of its genre in the way that it is pop, but and follows the convention of close ups of singers face and body and the convention of love and relationships as Ellie is seen with her partner. It doesn’t follow the convention of dance routines and provocative clothing.

What is Star Persona?

'A star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed from a range of materials.' A quote from Richard Dyer.

The range of materials Richard Dyer is talking about media materials such as films, celebrity chows, television interviews,  radio interviews, magazines (front cover and articles), magazine advert, music videos, digipack, press and newspapers.

'Stars present ideologies that they conveyed through media materials.' For example materialism, sexuality, rebellion and romance.

In our case we are star persona will be created through three different media materials; a music video, magazine advert and a digipack.

Make-up

During her dream phase. She could have white foundation or face paint on with mascara and red lipstick. This is so that when she stands up from lying on the floor and looks at her "dead body", when she "cries" and  knows that she is dead, her mascara will run down her face.

We would probably do something similar to the picture above but maybe less dramatic.

Hopefully getting this sort of effect when she is crying with mascara on.

Western Spaghetti

I really love this stop motion as it has a similar abstract feel to ours. It gave me many ideas for props for out music video. The video is pretty smooth so I think it was made with about 24+ frames.

Props List

Some ideas on some props for the music video.

Items that pass her in the dream:
  • Clock
  • Clouds (made from cotton wool, can gather from old pillows or just use pillows)
  • Cardboard cut out of window
  • 2 cardboard cut out people
  • Candle stick - with lightbulb (to give an abstract effect)
  • Mattress (where the singer will lie on when we are doing stop motion)
  • Different coloured bed sheets to cover the mattress for different parts of the music video (preferably light blue and black)

Some background on stop motion

Stop motion is an animation technique that creates an illusion of an inanimate object moving. The technique is done by moving the object minimally and taking a photograph. Many more photographs are then taken and then put into a sequence giving the illusion of movement. Objects that are usually involved are clay figures and dolls with joints however practically anything can be put into stop motion.

Stop motion dates back to as far as 1897 where it was used for Albert E. Smith's and J. Stuart Blackton's "The Humpty Dumpty Circus" where toy acrobats and animals come to life. This was probably the first use of stop animation. The technique was then later on used by Georges Méliés who used it for an opening sequence for one of his short films.

One of the earliest use of clay stop motion was "Modelling Extraordinary" which gave a lot more life onto the technique as it wowed the audience in 1912.

For our music video we have many ideas, one of them is to mix live action and stop motion together to give it more variety and a unique feel to it. We have also been discussing how many frame rates it will have, it will around 10+ or maybe less. The choppy feel from the stop motion will add to the abstract feel of the music video.

Video analysis

Gangnam Style
Gangnam Style is a kpop song by Psy, a Korean artist that just came back from a two year break. The catchy beat and rhythm are what makes the song highly recognizable to this day. Unlike the average music video, Gangnam Style is mainly unconventional but it does follow some conventions.
The lyrics to the song are respectable, about a woman who is able to present herself modestly and doesn’t show off “too much.” The music video is abstract as there doesn’t seem to be any sort of relation between the lyrics and video, apart from near to the end where it does seem to have some resemblance. In the beginning of the video, it starts off with Psy sitting in what appears to be sitting in a beach chair in front of a children’s playground with a child doing break dancing next to him. The amount of unusual content is one thing that makes the music video so striking and memorable.
There are some parts where the music does relate to the visuals but that’s mainly during the performance parts. Psy’s “horse riding” dance falls in rhythm and beat to the music and there are a few parts where he sings “oh,” the camera quickly zooms in and then back out, like a quick jolt of the camera.
There doesn’t seem to be any obvious demands of the record label, the only possible identification selling through the artist is probably just the number of times the camera does a close up of Psy’s face.
There also doesn’t seem to be any intertextuality either however as it is a Korean music video, there may be some Korean references in there that Koreans understand but the rest of the world doesn’t. The music does feature another famous kpop singer, Hyuna. People who listen to kpop and follow the news of it will be able to identify her in the music video.
Korea is a very modest and respectable country so any hints of voyeurism are highly frowned upon. The only slight hint of voyeurism is when Hyuna is doing a dance on the subway train, she spins around a pole but it’s very minor and almost unnoticeable, the camera isn’t zoomed in on her figure. Korea highly respects each others being so it’s rare to see any tip of close up on a female apart from the face. Hyuna is wearing modest clothing and doesn’t show a lot of skin, apart from her legs as she is wearing shorts. However, there is a scene where the camera is zoomed in on the lower half of a woman and Psy is shown screaming at it, this is a comedic effect that is nicely done as it rids any thoughts of voyeurism that comes to mind.
The genre characteristics are performances, as it is a pop music video.
The general feel the music video gives out is very upbeat, bright and vivid. There aren’t any dark or harsh colours, everything is soft and vibrant.

Jessie J – Domino
Domino is a pop song by Jessie J.
Just like Gangnam Style, the music video is unconventional. The music video is very abstract, the lyrics doesn’t appear to relate to the visuals however, the lyrics are about life and love, Jessie J is singing how she’s reacting so wildly to it, this is shown in the music video through the mise-en-scene, her costume, make up and the setting she is in is very bright and vibrant, reflecting the effect she has from the lyrics.
The music doesn’t reflect the visuals through instruments, it’s mainly just a music video of Jessie dancing around and just having fun, there are any shots of instruments. Her dance moves and actions do go with the beat and rhythm of the music video. The video does also cut on beat in some areas in the beginning, when she looks up, there is a beat and it quickly cuts.
Also similar to Gangnam Style there doesn’t appear to be any demands from the record label apart from lots of close ups of Jessie’s face.
There doesn’t seem to be any form of intextuality.
Unlike many female artists out there, Jessie J’s Domino is very modest. There is almost no voyeurism apart from the skin shown on her stomach from her top and her legs from wearing shorts. She is a very famous role model for teenage girls out there so she is setting an example saying that girls don’t have to show a lot to give an impression. In majority of her scenes, she is almost completely covered up, the costumes are however very eye-catching which makes up for the lack of voyeurism. Due to the lack of voyeurism, the video is therefore aimed to a much wider range group as anyone will be able to view it. Many female artists give off a lot of voyeurism for example NickiMinaj and Katy Perry.
The genre characteristics that appear in the video are Jessie’s small dance performances.

Costume Ideas

When she is in in the dream I think she sould either wear pajamas or some form of a night dress. The colour of the costume should be white or cream, but it could change through the video as we are going for an abstract theme.

Ellie Goulding - I Know You Care analysis

Lyrics matching to visuals - The first line of the song is "Clinging to me". There is a mid shot of Ellie Goulding singing but a delayed visual relating to the lyrics, where a long shot of couple is clinging onto each other. Around 1:00 in the music video. Ellie Goulding sings "there is trouble ahead, I can feel it." There is a close up of her singing, sitting on the sofa. Then around 1:04-1:06 is a close up of the nurse looking down opposite the actress, in the actress' point of view. This suggests that the nurse had some bad news to tell the actress. Suddenly the shot changes point of view. The same shot, but this time from the nurses point of view. This is when we can see the actress with tears in her eyes but not quite coming out. When Ellie Goulding sings "I know you care." At 1:26-1:29 this time the visuals perfectly match to the lyrics as the actor helps bathe the actress. Ellie Goulding sings "Two lovers" at 1:48 and then a few seconds later, 1:52 there is a close up of the actor putting his hand on the actress' chin. This was the actress' point of view shot. Showing that they are lovers. At 2:35 Ellie Goulding sings "winter so cold/
Now I don't warm my hands in your coat, and it's a close up of her singing again and then there are two shots of the actor and the actress in the snow. One close up of the actress speaking to the actor, it's from the actor's point of view. Then fades to a long shot of the actor having his arm around the actress on a bench in the snow.

Selling the artist - Through out the music video, there are a lot of close ups of Ellie Goulding singing. In this video Ellie Goulding doesn't do any dance routines. This makes her unconventional, but this means with all the close ups of her singing the audience can relate to her more than any other artist.

Music/ Visuals - There is editing, cutting and fading to the beat during this music video. An example would be at 0:05, where there is a long shot of the horses are running in a field.

Cover Theme Idea

Idea of death and hanging without showing too much.

Initial Ellie Goulding - Fly her death idea

If we have a shot of the model laying on the mattress with a black bed sheet covering it. Using stop motion we could take several shots of her gradually getting up and finally standing. This would strongly suggest she is dead and she is a ghost watching herself in a deep sleep. It will be a bird's eye view shot so we can see this happen clearly.

This is a video to show that we would literally film our actress to get up slowly. However we would need to edit it to make it look more ghostly, as if she were "dead".

Frame rate choice

We have made the choice to shoot our stop motion at 12 fps using the help of the video. 24 fps would provide a much smoother video but would take much more time. 12 fps will result in an adequately flowing image and add to the abstract quality we are going for.

Possible location

Possible location to do stop motion for Ellie Goulding - Fly on the floor like Her Morning Elegance / Oren Lavie. Which is a music video I have watched and is on the blog. We can move the furniture to make more room for the stop motion. If we need to use a mattress with either a blue or black bed sheet covering it, it can be provided.

Analyising Cheryl - Underneath the Sun

Analyising Cheryl - Underneath the Sun

Reference to looking / voyerism - The camera focuses on her legs and waist. This shows her costume which encourages voyerism. Whilst mid shots of her body when she isn't looking. Tracking slow and mirrors eyes looking her up and down from a male's point of view. This maybe a way to increase target audience. It also appeals to aspirations of females about what they "should" look like and how males "should" look them.
When she "looks" at us in a seductive but friendly way. This invites the spectator to experience voyerism and always males looking at her.
Intertextual - The scene where she is singing in the rain reminds the spectator about Singing in the Rain the movie. Also in the firt few shots she is in a old version of a cafe, reminds the spectator of a 50's american dinner.
Lyrics that link to the lyrics inlude when she is singing "sun" there is a sun image moving through the clouds.
Genre characteristics - During the music video the guys were dressed up in suits dancing around her, lifting her onto the car. This has continuity editing. Where as temporal editing occurred in one shot it was dark and the next it was daylight. For example in the second dance routine with the males dressed up in suits it's dark and then in the next shot it was suddenly daylight.

Two music video analyis

Evanesence – My Immortal

Goodwin’s points that apply to this music video are demands of record  label by using close ups of the artist to identify with and the band. There are also visual motifs of an extreme close up of the lead singer, Amy Lee’s hand wrapped in bandages. The unique selling point is her voice because she is the main vocalist and the main focus. This is because her vocals are very distinctive.
The camera follows her slowly as she tells her story.
The lyrics sometimes relates to the visual for example; when she sings “my once pleasant dreams” they cut to a man in the band as a visual representation and then “your voice it chased away” it cut’s back to her.
In the music video there is no reference to voyeurism because she is “dead”.

During the whole music video it is all in black and white. This gives it more emphasis to the story.  Shot types include close up of all the band  members, especially Amy Lee. Extreme close ups of her bandaged hands and feet when walking around a fountain edge. There is a few bird’s eye view shots. One is when she is on top of the roof and one when she is on top of a car. Also when she is on the roof sometimes the camera is at a low angle and a long shot to she that when she sings “I’m all alone” you  see her on the alone on the rooftop with loads of buildings in the back background

Rihanna – Where have you been

The genre characteristics of a dance routine came up a lot in different shots that where cutting on the beat which music is relating to visuals. There was also a dance break which also showed a reference to notion of looking and voyeurism.

Also with all the different outfits Rihanna was wearing throughout the music video they all seem to encourage voyeurism as well as her sexual gestures and the lyrics suggest.
The editing happens on the beat as well, such as split screens of Rihanna dancing and making it look like she’s multiplied.

Goodwin's points

Goodwin’s Points

Voyeurismis the pleasure in looking when you can’t be seen by the person you are looking at – a lot of videos create this illusion.

Selling the artist - the main singer had more screen time than the other two singers in the video so this sells the band with Ciro acting as the frontman.  Again the way that we dressed also sold us as artists as fans of tis type of music of the indie/rock genre will also be into a similar style.

Lyrics/visuals - some of the lyrics matched visuals as when Ciro sang 'la la la' the words came up on screen.  Also we matched visuals to the lyrics for example when we were sitting outside a coffee shop to the lyrics "go to the coffee shop dressed as we are."  We also showed Dom's hair as "a f***ing mess" when  the lyrics came up.

Music/visuals - the cuts matched the beat which matches the indie genre as most music videos of an indie go to a beat such as the Kaiser Cheifs, "Never Miss A Beat".

Intertextuality - an advert for the awe inspiring Peugeot 206 - integrated technology.
                         - Aunties Tea Shop in Cambridge
                         - Clothing makes - A&F, Fenchurch, Henleys

Genre - the genre is indie/rock.  As mentioned above the beat of the music and the matching visuals help to implement this genre along with the type of clothing being worn by the artists.

How we chose Ellie Goulding - Fly

We chose Ellie Goulding - Fly as our song choice out of the twelve songs we had to choose from. This was due to the fact we had stronger ideas for the song Fly by Ellie Goulding than any of the others. For this track we were thinking about stop motion. We thought about in the end she could fly up to heaven but not show any graphic detail of how she died. This was one idea as it was using Goodwin's point of matching visuals to the lyrics. We knew that if we did this we'd have to be careful as it needs to be suitable for our target audience being female teenagers mainly, but we would like it to appeal to teenage boys and other age groups. We also thought we could have split screens of one side being in the past, her still being alive and on the other her past away but still happy in heaven or something.

We couldn't really think of any strong narratives for these songs;

  1. Alexandra Burke - Dangerous
  2. Cher Lloyd - Love Me For Me
  3. Ellie Goulding - Fly
  4. One Night Only - Hide
  5. Red Hot Chilly Peppers - Bunker Hill
  6. Wiley - In the bag
  7. Rihanna - Your Love
  8. JLS - She's Gone
  9.  - B.P.C
  10.  - Know How
  11.  - Heaven Help
  12.  - Truth Or Dare

However for Cher Llyod we thought about a relationship. In the relationship the boy might not love her for her personality but her looks. This is where we could play around a little with Goodwin's point about voyeurism, as it is another convention in the pop genre. We thought that we could use the split screens well here. This is due to showing one female on one side and a male on the other and showing how they view what is important in relationships to them.

Why we chose stop motion...

We were looking at using stop motion before we even heard the song but after listening to it we knew we were using it for definite. Stop motion appealed to us for a few reasons.

1) when using stop motion the possibilities are endless, any effect you are looking for can be achieved with relative ease.

2) with the ability to use any objects and make them preform any movement stop motion often give as surreal feel/look to a video. We felt that this fitted particularly well with the song of choice and would add the overall finish of the music video.

there are some good examples in this video:

3) we have worked with stop motion before. we used it in our children's film opening sequence. We felt that we could use what we know/learnt from that to help create an even better stop motion video than before.

The Song we choose...

After listening to the options for our music video we made a unanimous decision to choose 'Fly' by Ellie Goulding.

We decided on this song because of two reasons. 1) Because we all preferred it to the other choices and 2) Because we had already said that we would like to make a stop motion video and this song lends itself perfectly for this. Upon hearing it the first time we were already having some great ideas towards the video.

Music Video Analysis: Disturbed - Land Of Confusion

Disturbed – Land of Confusion

This music video’s storyline is based around an opinion of modern day politics and how the world is run. It shows a government and worlds leaders are in a group round a table with a symbol on, representing the group they are. The flags of these countries are shown here: USA, Russia, Great Britain, Japan and France. The group leader, who we find out the identity of later in the video, is a fat man, who is shown as the person controlling the presidents and prime ministers of the richest countries in the world.

At the start of the video, we see a human with an evil face fly through space and crash into the earth. We then see army’s of the world leaders marching and planes bearing the symbol of the unseen leader bombing a desert with an oil refinery there, we then see tanks and other aircraft destroying the world as we see it. The monster that we saw had been imprisoned, possibly on the basis that he knew the truth and the unseen leader needed him to be kept away from the public. We see him break out of his chains. The world leaders are now frantic and worrying.

The monster is then seen to be walking freely through streets but the army is on the way. More destruction happens and the army catches up with the monster, and they have tanks and guns all pointing at him. He then raises his fist in the air and people rush out from buildings and under the ground to unite behind him, to form the monsters army. There is then a street fight of rebels vs. the leader army to show the people know the truth and are not happy about it, and they want society to be a fairer place not run by a dictator. We then see the fat unseen leader smile with joy at the chaos.

It then goes into a flash back of before the war started, before the bombings and the unseen leader took over. You then see the monster’s army walk through some destroyed streets to a building. The building is full of politicians and the world leaders. The monster just smiles as the public runs past him and attacks them. The monster then moves on to another room that has the unseen leader in. Again the mass of public runs past the monster, but there is a large size difference, I think the difference in size represents the difference in wealth between them both. The unseen leader is much larger than the public army. But the public army still wrestle the fat man down. The monster then climes onto his chest and puts his fists together and a blue flame comes out, he then flys up into space and back down to earth and lands in the heart of the unseen leader, the unseen leader then explodes into money, showering everything.

We then see that the city has been rebuilt and the new leader is the monster. The song ends with the crowd throwing their fists in the air.

Voyeurism: The pleasure of looking at the band members.

There isn’t any true voyeurism in this video, as the actual band members aren’t in the video at all. The video itself is an animation about government and politics in the modern day. The main character, a monster has a chiselled six pack and on the whole bares his muscles. This monster has appeared on covers of albums and in other music videos. The monster looks human but has a demons head, perhaps he was human at some point but the way that society is has corrupted his mind, showing how corrupt society is to everybody.

Selling the artist:

The artists aren’t actually in the video, but you get the impression from the video that the artist believes in teamwork and fairness between people and countries. I think the artist is sold to the audience by singing a song about the ‘Land of Confusion’, which is our land, our Earth. It makes us think does this video relate to real life? In my opinion yes it does in some aspects, e.g. the world leaders have the money and could be hiding things from society to cover their tracks. So the artist talks about real life problems with an abstract twist, the monster is seen as rough, wearing a hood and rags, this can give off the effect that you don’t need wealth and riches to control your life, or to be a powerful figure in society... But you do need super powers.

Intertextuality:

The message brought off by the video is similar to a line in the film ‘V for Vendetta’ – “People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people”. Also from the film, it only took 1 man to stand up against the power to show that there is another way forward, to break the dictatorship on how we are expected behave in modern society. In the music video, it took 1 man, first seen as a monster or a terrorist but then seen as a figure that crushes the evil that we all know exists but can’t do anything about, just like in the film ‘V for Vendetta’.

Also when the monster figure is walking through the trashed streets a letter ‘S’ signifying ‘Superman’ landed on his chest being blown by wind, he then looks down and throws it away showing that he is just a man standing up for what he believes is right and shouldn’t get any special treatment.

The unseen leader character looks a bit like ‘The Penguin’ out of the ‘Batman’ films, I don’t know if it is deliberate but his appearance has many of the same features.

Lyrics/ Visuals:

In this video most of the time the lyrics match up to the video. For example: ‘Oh Superman, where are you now?’ – When this happens, a letter S flies into the chest of the monster to show that superman is here in the form of the monster.

‘The men of steel, these men of power, are losing control by the hour’ – in the video, it shows the world leaders frantically shouting at each other looking for answers.

‘There’s too many men, too many people making too many problems’ – bombs were being dropped on cities by planes of the leaders’ army.

‘And there’s not much love to go around’ – in the video it shows cities around the world in ruin.

This entire verse of the song is played twice, firstly when the people’s army are arming up with poles ready to fight against the leaders’ army and again when the monster’s hands are glowing with a blue flame: ‘Now this is the world we live in, and these are the hands we’re given, stand up and lets start trying, to make it a place worth fighting for’.

So the artists have tried very hard to keep the video relevant to every line. The only time when a vast amount of time isn’t related is when the flash back sequence is happening it shows the start of the video in reverse to show what the city was like before all of the wars and corruption began. This is relevant to the lyrics but not line by line like the majority of the song.

Music / Visuals:

The music itself is heavy sounding using a mix of lead & bass guitars, drums and electric piano. The tone of the music is fairly major with a mix of minor parts for some of the more depressing lyrics. It is mainly major because the song is about pulling yourself together to do a great thing, sort of like a confidence speech that you have before playing a team sport or starting a war, in affect the song is meant to raise the moral of the monster’s army so they can beat the unseen leader to claim back the land which is rightfully theirs. The tempo of the music is fast which means when you hear it you will have an increased heart rate. The faster heart rate ties in with the war shown in the video and the other violence shown.

Genre

The genre of Disturbed – Land of Confusion is hard rock / heavy metal. Metal videos are often abstract or show less of the band members or have other themes involved with their music videos. If you see the actual artist playing in heavy metal music videos you often see them playing guitars. If the tempo is fast, then you see the artists thrashing wildly at their guitars to show their passion for their music, however if the tempo is slow, they are more delicate and sing with pain, when it is a slow tempo it is often in a minor key and about a depressing subject. ‘Land of Confusion’ is different as there aren’t any instruments or band members shown in the video, but it is still easily identifiable to be a heavy metal / hard rock song. The clothing worn by band members is often casual and dark colours, depending on the key. The monster’s clothing is very minimal, torn rags and a chain from the prison where he broke out from, which helps reinforce the genre of heavy metal.

Music Video Analysis: Carley Rae Jepson - Call Me Maybe

Carly Rae Jepson – Call Me Maybe

This music video’s storyline is based around the attraction of a female to a male neighbour. The female, Carly, tries her hardest to get the man’s attention by somewhat embarrassing herself for him. She goes off in a dream at one part of the music video to a place where she is hugging and kissing her dream man and when she wakes up, the dream man is standing over her. She then makes him watch her sing her song, but at the end as she writes down her number to give to the man, the man walks over to one of the band members and gives him his number signifying to everyone the reason why he wasn’t paying attention to Carly is because he is gay. The video then finishes with a gutted shocked face from Carly.

Voyeurism: The pleasure of looking at the band members.

Carly Rae Jepson’s music video of ‘Call Me Maybe’ is a good example of voyeurism as the main 2 characters are attractive. This means that people will view the video for the attractiveness of Carly and of ‘the boy next door’. The voyeurism will attract people who wear the same clothes as the two characters and may affect people to dress the same as them. This video would be less successful if there weren’t any attractive actors in the video. This video conforms to Goodwin’s point of voyeurism.

Selling the artist:

To sell the artist in this video, most of the shots were of Carly Rae Jepson in a variety of different outfits, but always looking to impress, which is the aim of her song to impress, so it works. She is sold to the audience as a young adult looking for a relationship with the guy next door. This means she is single and available if she is or is not in real life. As she is attractive and single the male heterosexual audience may fancy her and watch her videos and buy her music because of this attraction. As you watch the video and listen to the lyrics you might get the impression she is aiming her words at you and she is offering her number to you.

Lyrics/ Visuals:

At some points in the video her actions or shots in the video match up to the lyrics but not very much. An example of when they do is when she said ‘skin was showing’ it cut to a shot of the man taking his shirt off. At the end when she sings, ‘call me maybe?’ the man makes a hand phone and puts it against his head and mimes the words ‘call me’ to one of the band members. But generally the video doesn’t relate to the lyrics exactly. The entire song is however about meting a guy for the first time and trying to get noticed by him and get his number, which is what the lyrics are saying. Just before this happened, Carly is writing her number down on a piece of paper to give to the guy next door, which reinforces the fact that she wants him to call him.

Music / Visuals:

The music of the song is all major, which gives us a light hearted image of what the song will be about. The music has a medium tempo, not slow and not too fast. The music represents Carly’s optimistic approach about finding love with the boy next door. She is showing off her logic to be, if you have confidence you can do anything, she is showing confidence in herself to attract the boy without even talking to him. The Mise-En-Scene of a sunny day reinforces the optimism that Carly possesses about going out with the guy next door, if she was lusting after him but was depressed about it, the weather is more likely to be cold and raining, with the music being much more dull and depressing. The tone of the song is major and happy up until right at the end of the song, where the song cuts off using the sound effect of taking a vinyl record of a record player and her showing a shocked face when she finds out why he has been ignoring her, because he is gay.

Genre:

The genre of ‘Call Me Maybe’ is pop, and pop videos focus much more on the sexual element of the artist than how ‘hardcore’ or ‘wild’ they are. There are many shots showing Carly Rae Jepson looking attractive. This fits in with the song’s lyrics and video as she is trying to attract a guy’s attention, and the first stage of that is to make yourself look appealing to him. Throughout the video she gets more daring at catching his attention by doing a car wash wearing a short skirt and a loose vest. So the genre of pop conforms to Goodwin’s theory of music videos.

Intertextuality:

There are not very strong intertextual links in this music video, at 1 point in the video, one of the band members does a moon walk – this is referencing Michael Jackson. There is another time in the music video where Carly gets knocked out and has a dream about being ‘happily ever after’ with the boy next door – which is linked with a fairy tale ending.
